Sixteen Safe Words shows the interpersonal dynamics within a ‘serious’ sadomasochistic relationship. Safe words are famously used in S and M as the mutually agreed signal for the dominant to stop inflicting pain on the submissive partner. In Sixteen Safe Words the pain is emotional as each partner threatens to retaliate and abandon the other while the other fears reprisals for their earlier betrayal. Never at the risk of losing their co-dependency they stay together.
